EGOHOME Black 12″ Hybrid Mattress: Review in brief
The EGOHOME Black 12″ Hybrid mattress is a great pick for those on a budget, with regular sales meaning you’ll be able to grab a queen for a sub-$500 price. The obvious main attraction of the EGOHOME is its low price, but does this mean you have to forgo quality?
Like many of the top recommendations in our best mattress guide the EGOHOME I tested is a hybrid mattress, built with a combination of coils and foams. The brand also makes an all-foam version of the same mattress that promises a softer and plusher sleep surface; read our EGOHOME Black 12″ Memory Foam Mattress review for all the details. EGOHOME’s 12″ Hybrid, on the other hand, offers a medium-firm feel that I expected would appeal more back sleepers than anyone else. But what was the mattress actually like to sleep on?
I slept on a full size mattress for three weeks along with my husband, and wanted to see if it could deliver a comfortable night’s sleep for a cheaper price. I also asked a wider testing panel with different body types and sleep styles to try out the mattress. First impressions were that the EGOHOME is a chunky mattress for its price tag. It’s an impressive 12” tall, with four layers along with a top and bottom cover. It’s a simple but neat design that I thought belied its affordable price. Speaking of that price, there’s nearly always an offer on the mattress – a queen is currently selling for $439.99. That’s a very reasonable price that’s in line with many of the best cheap mattresses.

Cheap mattresses don’t always equate to decent quality, though, and you would expect there to be some trade-off because of this. The EGOHOME hybrid impressed me with excellent edge support, decent motion isolation and good temperature regulation. But when it came to the sleeping styles it suits, things got a little more complicated.
I think the EGOHOME hybrid will suit average and heavier weight side sleepers. It’s a medium firm mattress that I’d rate at 6.5 out of 10, with enough sinkage around the shoulders in particular to contour a little around pressure points. However, that sinkage around the shoulders translated into a lack of upper body support when sleeping on my back.
I’m a lightweight combination sleeper while my husband is an average weight combination sleeper, and we both noticed this lack of support on our backs. This lack of upper body support means I wouldn’t recommend the mattress to stomach sleepers, either. I also found the mattress too firm and unyielding for side sleeping. I think some lightweight back sleepers may also get on with the mattress as it does have decent lumbar support, but the upper body support is going to be an issue for some.
Overall though, I think the EGOHOME’s strength is in providing a decent cheap mattress (when on sale) that’s ideal for guest rooms and those looking for the best mattresses for college students. Its height is particularly impressive, and this feels like a substantial mattress that will stand the test of time.

- You can expect to find monthly mattress sales at EGOHOME
- The mattress is generally discounted by around 40-50%

You’ll most likely see these extra discounts around major sales events – this is an early 4th of July discount.
Alongside the discount you’ll also get a 100-night trial and 10-year warranty, which I think is fairly standard for this price bracket of mattress. Shipping to your front door is also free, as are returns if you decide the mattress isn’t the right fit for you.

EGOHOME Black 12″ Hybrid Mattress review: Design
- A 12” high mattress with four layers and a top and bottom cover
- Anti-heat Graphene cover to help keep sleepers cool
- Patented foams along with a pocketed coil system
Like the best hybrid mattresses, the EGOHOME Hybrid is made up of a combination of coils and foams. Starting at the top, you’ll find a graphene-infused cover that’s designed to regulate heat as well as resisting bacteria and preventing odor buildup. Up next is a layer of Copper Gel AeroFusion foam that’s infused with compressed copper and gel particles. As well as helping to control moisture, this comfort layer is designed to contour to a sleeper’s individual shape.
Up next is the brand’s patented BraceSleeper comfort foam. This is a transition layer, designed to work alongside the spring layer below for comfort and support. Speaking of those springs, they’re up next with a layer of individually pocketed springs that provide targeted support for different body areas and help to minimize motion transfer. A layer of BraceSleeper support foam underneath provides support and durability for the whole mattress. Finally, you’ll find a fiberglass-free bottom inner cover. This surrounds the whole mattress ensures that it’s flame-retardant.
The mattress is OEKO-TEX certified and CertiPUR-US certified and is a good choice for those suffering with allergies. Do note that the mattress is spot clean only (despite having a zipper on its underside) so make sure to invest in one of the best mattress protectors to keep it in good condition.
EGOHOME Black 12″ Hybrid Mattress review: Comfort & support
- A medium firm mattress rated at 6.5 out of 10
- The mattress is best suited to average and heavier weight side sleepers, along with some lightweight back sleepers
- Not a good fit for stomach sleepers and many back sleepers
After three weeks sleeping on the EGOHOME I can safely say that it’s a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to comfort and support. As a lightweight sleeper, I found it too firm for side sleeping while my husband, who is of an average build, found it far more comfortable. If you are a lightweight side sleeper, I’d recommend taking a look at our best mattress for side sleepers guide, which will give you some softer options.
My husband found that the mattress had enough contouring, particularly around the shoulders, to make it comfortable for side sleeping, although I would stress that it’s still going to be best suited to those who like a little more firmness.
When it comes to back sleeping both my husband and I found the mattress lacking in upper body support. The mattress does have decent lumbar support, thanks to its firmer feel, but we found that the bed sank too far around the shoulders and upper back for adequate spinal support. I do think that some lightweight back sleepers will be fine on this mattress – I do prefer a slightly firmer surface myself. One of the best medium-firm mattresses could well be a better fit or, one of the best mattresses for back pain if you’re specifically struggling with back problems.
My thoughts were backed up by the sinkage test I performed with a 45lb weight, which sank by 4.7in in the upper body region. In contrast, this same weight only sank by 3.9in at the edge (more on that later).
That mixed support throughout the mattress meant that the stomach sleepers I asked to try it out found that there wasn’t enough support to keep their hips elevated, leading to their spines falling out of alignment. The best mattresses for stomach sleepers will support the hips and keep them raised, which is vital for this sleeping positions. And unless you’re a side sleeper, I also feel that this mattress won’t be supportive enough for heavier bodies, who would be better off looking at our best mattresses for heavy people guide.
As I mentioned earlier in this review, I think the EGOHOME would excel as a guest bed as it is supportive enough for a few nights. And it’s an ideal choice for college students, providing a substantial mattress that will easily cope with the demands thrown at it.

EGOHOME Black 12″ Hybrid Mattress review: Delivery & setup
- Free delivery to your door
- Some light off gassing for around 12 hours
- The mattress took around 10 hours to inflate enough to sleep on
Because I’m based in the UK, the EGOHOME Hybrid was actually shipped to Tom’s Guide’s in-house studio to start with, arriving as a mattress in a box — compressed and vacuum-packed to make it easy to transport. When you order in the US it will take one to three business days to process the order and delivery is expected within three to seven days via UPS or FedEx. You will receive shipping updates from the carrier that’s used for your particular location.
The first thing I noticed about the EGOHOME Hybrid was its weight. We were sleeping on a full size mattress, which weighed in at 53lbs. A queen is 60lbs and even a twin mattress weighs 40lbs, so it’s not the easiest to maneuver. The lack of handles on the mattress doesn’t help either, so do make sure you have a couple of people available to lug it about as needed. It’s by no means the heaviest mattress I’ve tested but it does have some heft to it.
Wrapped in plastic, the mattress was easy to open carefully with scissors, but it was quite slow to inflate to a height that was suitable to sleep on, taking a full 12 hours. However, it had completely decompressed within a day. There was some slight off-gassing over the first 12 hours, but it wasn’t too bad and dissipated quickly during this time period. I would recommend rotating the mattress every three months to keep it in top condition.

EGOHOME Black 12″ Hybrid Mattress review: Performance
- Decent motion isolation for a hybrid mattress
- Excellent edge support
- Good temperature regulation but hot sleepers will probably find it too warm
Our main and secondary tester slept on a full size EGOHOME Hybrid mattress for a month, inviting other adults of varying body types and sleeping styles to try it out to get a wider view of how the mattress feels. As well as recording our own personal experiences, we also carried out a number of tests to gauge motion isolation, temperature regulation and edge support.
Motion isolation
Decent motion isolation is particularly important on a mattress if you’re sharing it with a restless sleeper. Motion transfer can reverberate across the mattress and disturb sleep, plus you don’t want a mattress that shifts markedly when someone gets in or out of it. I thought that the EGOHOME Hybrid had good motion isolation, particularly considering that there are bouncy springs involved in its construction. The foams did a great job of reducing motion transfer although I do think very lightweight sleepers might notice a little movement.
I also carried out an objective drop test, using an empty wine glass and dropping an 8.8lb weight from a low height to simulate a sleeper’s movement at night. The glass remained stable at 25 inches, with a slight wobble at 10 inches At five inches the wine glass fell over.
Score: 4.5 out of 5
Temperature Control
We tested the EGOHOME Hybrid during the summer, sleeping under a 4.5 tog duvet. Thanks to my reptilian qualities I’m not the best person to judge temperature control, so it’s over to my husband, who is a hotter sleeper.
He enjoyed the cover of the mattress, which was cool to the touch and, combined with the copper and gel infused foam beneath, did a good job of drawing heat away from the body. The layer of coils also helps with airflow for this mattress. However, the foams are quite dense and I think that if you are a very hot sleeper, you will be best off choosing one of the best cooling mattresses instead.
Score: 4 out of 5
Edge support
Good edge support allows sleepers to spread out and utilize the full width of a mattress, as well as providing a stable surface to sit on. I carried out a test with my 45lb weight to determine sinkage on the edge of the bed and was impressed by it only sinking by 3.9 inches (particularly as the mattress sank further in the center).
As my husband and I sleep on a full mattress, often joined by a variety of foster cats and sometimes a child, good edge support is vital for us. I was impressed by the EGOHOME in this respect, always feeling well supported.

EGOHOME Black 12″ Hybrid Mattress review: User reviews
- The EGOHOME Hybrid has an overall rating of 4.86 out of 5, with 153 reviews
- Customers praise the motion isolation and temperature regulation in particular
- The lowest star rating so far is 3 out of 5
There aren’t masses of customer reviews for the EGOHOME Hybrid as yet but to get a broader picture, we always look at these to see how a wider selection of sleepers have rated the mattress.
Out of the 153 reviews the mattress has received so far, nearly all are 5 or 4 star rated, with only two 3 star ratings and nothing lower. The mattress is rated highly for its motion isolation and temperature regulation, with customers praising the top cover for staying cool and helping to keep them comfortable at night. Customers also praised the mattress for side sleeping, reporting that they didn’t suffer with ‘dead’ arm and many back sleepers also enjoyed the mattress (in contrast to my experience).
Of course, mattress firmness and the sleeping experience you’ll have is very subjective, so the 100-night trial does give you time to try the EGOHOME out to see if it’s for you. The only slight complaint was from a customer who said it took four days for one corner of the mattress to rise fully, but this was incredibly minor.
Should you buy the EGOHOME Black 12″ Hybrid Mattress?
If you’re on a budget and pick the right time to buy the EGOHOME Hybrid, you’ll be getting a substantial 12″ mattress for under $500. This is an incredibly good price for a bed that I think will be durable and last for a decent amount of time. As a mattress for college students or a guest room, it’s an excellent addition and average and heavier weight side sleepers should particularly enjoy the way it sleeps.
However, it’s not a great fit for stomach sleepers or any back sleepers other than those of a lighter weight due to its lack of upper body support, although lumbar support is decent. Heaver back and stomach sleepers in particular won’t feel supported enough and could run the risk of their spines dropping out of alignment.
Edge support is excellent, and motion isolation is good enough for all but the very lightest of sleepers. I also felt that temperature regulation was good, thanks to the cooling cover but I did feel that very hot sleepers might find it a fraction too warm. Overall, this is an excellent cheap mattress (if purchased at the right time) that looks and performs much better than its price suggests.
